Our founder’s path began over 15 years ago with relentless experiments in heat pump efficiency.
Driven by first-principles thinking, the goal was simple yet ambitious: create a system so optimised that it defies traditional energy loss. Imagine a perfect heat pump viewed through a thermal scanner—a machine appearing 100% completely cold, with all heat energy directed inward, harvesting ambient sources without a trace of waste. This vision led to a pivotal realisation: by integrating a turbine on the expanding fluid, we could capture potential energy that would otherwise dissipate, transforming inefficiency into power.
By combining high-efficiency heat pumps to extract heat energy from the atmosphere as the sole fuel source and feeding it into an ORC system, we could generate clean, reliable electricity. To maximize Carnot efficiency—the holy grail of thermodynamic performance—we focused on making the cold side much colder, down to -75°C using cascade chillers and Joule-Thomson coils.
The result? Our K-ORC generators achieve a system COP of 6. For every 1kw of electrical energy spent 6 kw of heat energy is delivered to the turbine which at 50% efficiency delivers 3kw electrical back to the system with 2 kw spare.
